Avant-garde Art Deco

The followers of this style were able to go much further to meet the fashion of the 21st century. The living room is decorated in classic colours, but the furniture and room’s configuration are more than modern. Additionally, the avant-garde accessories in the form of a glass table and an openwork wardrobe give the cosmically modern look.

Lighting

Like the whole style, light is also an element that should be subdued and give a sense of comfort. The chandelier in the central point refers to glamourous splendor, while the lighted ceiling, table lamp and wall lamps perfectly illuminate the room, creating a luxurious atmosphere.

DETAILS

Art Deco was one of the most exciting and influential styles of the 20th century and still has an impact on interior design. As a style, Art Deco can be easily adapted to any interior, so you can keep a clear mark. Contemporary Art Deco furniture is still being designed, demonstrating the lasting charm of a rich and luxurious deco style.

The finishing of an art deco-style apartment requires bold thinking and remains in the subject of wealth and unmisguided luxury. Art Deco is elegant, functional and modern, even though is dating back to the 1920s still offers an ideal starting point for many nowadays projects. Even though the full Art Deco interior gives a stunning effect, you can add only a selection of art Deco style décor, depending on your taste. Art Deco interiors will certainly add a touch of old-fashioned glow and pattern, but will also highlight some key elements such as colours, patterns and decorations, that means what creates interiors in our times.

For the begining of Art Deco style we should go back to 1920s and France, particularly to the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs which means the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Art in 1925. Deco was a very popular, international design movement that was accepted worldwide and covered the period from 1925 to 1940. All art disciplines and decorative art Deco style can be found in art, interior design, furniture, fashion, jewelry, textiles and architecture. Art Deco is inspired by the advances in the modern technology of the 1920s, as seen in fluid lines, geometric shapes and streamlined forms characteristic of this trend. Deco has inborn luxury, which is underlined by the use of silver, crystal, ivory, edible and lacquer. Style is purely elegant, sleek and functional, and that is why it survived. Deco owes its style of some earlier moves: geometric forms of kubilistic art, machine style of Constructivism and Futurism, and of course its predecessor, secession. It was also noted that there were elements of Fowicism, as well as Azteka, Egyptian and classical antiquity. Art Deco is purely decorative – there is no philosophical basis, which explains its wide range of use.

Interior design elements

Usually, Art Deco projects are characterized by stepped or radiant styles, unlike the liquid organic shapes of its predecessor, Art Nouveau. Deco’s modern yet rich style was just as suited to public buildings as furniture and art design. There are many examples of the geometric shapes of Art Deco in architecture – many well-known buildings have the distinctive look of Deco, especially in New York: Chrysler building or Rockerfeller Center.

Structurally, the Art Deco projects are based on mathematical geometric shapes, which have been taken from the Greek-Roman classics to the same extent as the distinctive forms of Babylon, Asyria, ancient Egypt and the Aztecs in Mexico. Art Deco is characterized by trapezoidal, zigzag and triangular shapes, good jodal patterns, stepped forms, machine curves and solar themes – all in every form of Art Deco, from furniture and buildings to jewelry and works of art.

Decorations and patterns

These elements were in Art Deco style from the very beginning, as they let the interior to be warm and welcoming. So often, the interiors of Deco concentrate around the design, which makes it a key element in achieving the Art Deco effect. The patterns that were widely used in the interiors of Deco included leaves, branches and feathers, trapezoid, shirony and zigzag, stylized animals and acts, sun bursts and jagged, stepped or pointed edges that resemble skyscrapers. The stepped geometric chandelier project in Mayfair Penthouse by Oliver Burnsa is an excellent example of the luxurious art Deco work – adding elegance and deceit with its cancias, sharp form.

Colours

With bold Deco style silver, black and chrome accents often appear, so be sure to consider this when choosing a colour palette for the rest of the room. There is a wide range of colours to complement those glossy, metallic or black details of Deco: bright and deep yellow, reds, greens, blues and roses. This is evident in the work of the famous interior architect, India Mahdavi. The Art Deco elements redesigned by her, such as its gold linear accents and geometric tile floor, are lifted by a beautiful pink tint that is extensively used in many of her projects.

Materials and finishes

While Art Deco elements use a variety of materials, each element of this design deliberately has a luxurious, glossy or reflective finish. The wood is strongly polished or, alternatively, finished with a lacquer that has an unrivaled glow. From the very beginning of this trend, painted furniture has been a key element of any Art Deco project – available in black and white (for the classic deco appearance) or in a range of colours, including pastel and deep shades, for more personalized interior design elements.

Furniture

The furniture of the 1920s and 1930s was a personification of sex! Sleek mirrors, shiny wood, smooth metal finishes, lush leather, glue shades and exotic decoration are characteristic features of Art Deco furniture. Vintage furniture is back, while Art Deco sofas, tables, closets and chairs are still very popular.
